Bengal heading towards self-sufficiency in grains

Contract farming helps spread basmati aroma

Contract farming by leading exporters and excellent
weather have boosted the quality and output of country’s
aromatic basmati rice, popular in the niche export
market. The country is likely to produce around 1.7 to
1.8m tonnes in ’03-04 (July-June) compared with last
year’s 1.3m tonnes of long-grain rice.
Nabard okays 62 Gujarat cold storages

In order to encourage Gujarat farmers to adopt better
technology to preserve fruits and vegetables, the
National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development,
Gujarat zone, has sanctioned 62 cold storage projects
with a cumulative cost of Rs 76.50 crore.
SAARC nations impose ban on poultry imports

EVEN as officials of international agencies such as the
FAO and the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that
the threat of bird flu would continue for the next
couple of months, health officials of the SAARC nations
on Monday decided to enforce a temporary ban on import
of live poultry, poultry meat products, egg and egg
products from the affected countries.
Broomrape weed threatens mustard crop

Sops likely for agri infrastructure investment

In a bid to boost infrastructure investment in
agriculture, the Government is planning to introduce a
capital subsidy up to 25 per cent of the cost of the
